A new survey conducted by the Daily Mail and JL Partners found that 71 percent of Americans believe that incumbent President Joe Biden is too old to seek re-election for a second term. The survey also identified dissatisfaction with the president’s performance in other areas, with 52 percent of voters feeling worse off since he took office. The sentiment of Biden’s age being a hindrance to his ability to lead effectively was noted along party and demographic lines.
Independent voters, who played a crucial role in Biden’s victory in 2020 and could impact the 2022 House of Representatives race, were also found to agree with this sentiment. Biden, who is already the oldest-sitting president in the US history, has acknowledged that his age could be a legitimate issue for voters in the upcoming 2024 elections. Even his rivals at the GOP have taken jabs at his declining cognitive function, with former President Donald Trump repeatedly claiming his successor is suffering from dementia.
At a recent event in Connecticut, Biden’s age was on display as he concluded his speech with “God save the queen,” apparently paying tribute to the late British monarch Elizabeth II who passed away in September 2022. The President’s mental faculties have also been a cause for concern, with many expressing worries about his cognitive abilities. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has even called for competency tests for candidates over the age of 75.
