Peru Declares Health Emergency After Case Explosion of ‘Vaccine Side-Effect’ Linked to Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Peru has declared a “national health emergency” as cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome continue to soar out of control.

Over the weekend the government of Peru declared a 90-day health emergency as a result of an “unusual increase” in cases of the rare Covid vaccine-induced disorder.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare disease where the body’s immune system attacks part of the nervous system.

Peru is not alone, however, as cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome have been spiking around the world following the introduction of the mRNA Covid shots. Additionally, researchers advise that older individuals who received the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine from Pfizer be kept under observation for Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Health officials are aware of the disease’s risk, though, as two elderly people who received the shot during clinical trials developed Guillain-Barre syndrome. In clinical trial results published in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists reportedly cautioned of the risks.

“If RSVpreF vaccine is approved and recommended, these adverse events warrant close monitoring in future studies and with real-world data and postmarketing surveillance,” the scientists wrote.

The study, which was published Wednesday, was supported by Pfizer.

A 40-year-old man in Canada was identified as having Guillain-Barre syndrome as a result of receiving the Covid vaccine. The father from British Columbia who was diagnosed with the crippling illness was given compensation.

In Peru, cases of GBS are continuing to soar.

The Peruvian government declared a 90-day national health emergency Saturday due to an “unusual increase” of cases of GBS, which total 165 with four deaths, reported Xinhua.

The decree, which was published in the official newspaper El Peruano, outlines an action plan that was created with a budget of 12.12 million soles (US$3.3 million) with the intention of enhancing patient care in healthcare facilities, strengthening case-control, and creating educational materials for the general public and medical staff.

The Sun Daily reported that some of the measures included getting intravenous immunoglobulin and human albumin, as well as getting a specialist to diagnose the biological agents linked to the syndrome and helping patients in emergency or critical condition get on an airplane.

So far this year, at least 18 of the country’s 24 departments have reported at least one case of the syndrome.
