The Republican congresswoman from Georgia tweeted on Tuesday: “Do you think the U.S. and NATO were involved with the Russia ‘coup’?
Interesting timing, isn’t it?” Her comment was in reference to the detention of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the subsequent protests that have erupted in cities across Russia over the past week.
Greene’s tweet came hours after Fox News host Maria Bartiromo suggested on her show Monday that the U.S. and NATO may have been involved in the unrest in Russia.
“I’m talking about the possibility that this was an inside job, that this was actually done by the West, by the United States, by NATO,” she said without providing any evidence.
Both Greene and Bartiromo have a history of parroting what the mainstream media would consider “conspiracy theories” including those related to election fraud and QAnon. Their recent comments have of course drawn criticism from Democrats and some Republicans who have called for them to be held accountable for spreading misinformation.
The Russian government has blamed Western nations, including the U.S., for the protests and the detention of Navalny, while the international community has called for his release and expressed support for the protesters.
Greene’s tweet questions the trust we should have in our own government to tell us the truth.
The notion that the U.S. may be behind the protests in Russia has not yet been supported by any evidence.
Greene, who consistently praises so called right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, introduced the notion that the United States was behind the rebellion in Russia without directly claiming it’s true.
“After our government has been funding a proxy war with Russia in Ukraine for over a year, I sure hope our government isn’t behind a coup attempt currently happening in Russia,” the congresswoman tweeted on Saturday, referencing the support the U.S. has given to Ukraine since it was invaded by Russian forces. “Regime change in a nuclear armed country may lead to terrible consequences the American people don’t want.”
Her tweet echoes the sentiment of a Truth Social post by former president Donald Trump, who addressed the developments in Russia earlier in the day.
