Charles McGonigal, a special agent for the FBI, received a sentence of more than four years in prison. According to the Southern District of New York U.S. District Attorney’s Office, he had been providing intelligence to a Russian oligarch.
In 2021, McGonigal, 55, received a 50-month prison sentence for his dealings with Oleg Deripaska. McGonigal acknowledged receiving $17,500 from Deripaska as part of a plea deal.
Maybe the most well-known contribution of the FBI “spy tracker” is his assistance in starting the Russia hoax against President Trump. A large portion of the preliminary work that resulted in the launch of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation was done by McGonigal. McGonigal “violated the trust his country placed in him by using his high-level position at the FBI to prepare for his future in business,” according to U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. Williams continued, “Once he left public service, he jeopardized our national security.” McGonigal expressed his “deep remorse.” He declared that he accepted “full responsibility” and that he “never intended to hurt my family, the FBI, or the United States.”
