The Daily Mail has reported that a 54-year-old announcer passed out during an on-air presentation at a Pasadena, California, soccer game on Sunday.

Shaka Hislop, a former Premier League goalkeeper, gave spectators and ESPN coworkers a worry when he passed out during Sunday’s match between AC Milan and Real Madrid.

Accuweather data indicates that Pasadena had temperatures in the mid-80s on Sunday, but it is not apparent whether factor—heat index or temperature—was to blame for Hislop’s on-air breakdown.

Almost immediately after Hislop fell face-forward onto the field, ESPN aired a commercial.

According to The Daily Mail, the network later informed viewers that Hislop was conscious and being examination by medical professionals.

Almost immediately after Hislop fell face-forward onto the field, ESPN quickly tried doing damage control and went on to air a commercial.

According to The Daily Mail, the network later informed viewers that Hislop was conscious and being examination by medical professionals.

“He’s conscious, he’s talking, I think he’s a little embarrassed about it all,” Thomas added. “He’s apologised profusely. Not a man who likes people to make a fuss of him.”

Obviously far too early to make any sort of diagnosis, but the important thing is, that Shaka’s conscious and we spoke to his family as well, because you imagine seeing that happen live.”

Thomas noted Hislop’s wife indicated things were looking okay for her husband.

“Silly, Shaka,” Thomas jokingly concluded.

According to the Mail article, Hislop played more than 100 times for Reading and West Ham during his career. He also played for Newcastle and Portsmouth and transitioned to television after retiring in 2007.

Through social media, supporters communicated with the former soccer star.

“Much love to Shaka Hislop and all at ESPN tonight,” the Men in Blazers remarked in a Twitter post. “Terrifying to witness. Wishing all strength and a speedy return to health for the big man.”

“Sending thoughts and prayers to Shaka Hislop after he passed out live on the ESPN broadcast of AC Milan vs. Real Madrid,” read another fan’s tweet. “Glad to hear he’s conscious now, and the medics are looking after him.”

“Wishing my mate and top man Shaka Hislop a speedy recovery,” Craig Forrest commented on Twitter. “I know that the #WHUFC family and all of football will have him in their thoughts today.”

Some Twitter users linked Hislop’s lumbering fall to his COVID-19 vaccination.

“I wonder why so many people are collapsing on TV?” another poster questioned. “It seems to correlate with the use of a certain medical product…”
