‘Cis’ and ‘cisgender’ are now ‘considered slurs’ on Twitter.
Twitter CEO Elon Musk has declared that the word “cis,” is a derogatory term aimed at people who are not trans, and will now be considered a slur on Twitter.
His statement came in response to a tweet from a user who complained that they were being harassed for using the term, which they understood as a neutral descriptor.
Musk responded by saying that “Cis is considered a slur now? Wait, what? I thought it just meant someone who isn’t trans.” He went on to say that his team would “take a look” at the issue.
While some Twitter users have been calling for the platform to ban the term entirely, others argue that it shouldn’t be considered a slur if used accurately and respectfully. Many are also calling for more education on the topic to promote understanding and inclusivity.
Regardless of whether the term is considered a slur or not, it is important for individuals to use language that is respectful and affirming to all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.
Here is Musk’s tweet:
Repeated, targeted harassment against any account will cause the harassing accounts to receive, at minimum, temporary suspensions.
The words “cis” or “cisgender” are considered slurs on this platform.
