Former Sniper Rep. Cory Mills to Launch Independent Investigation into Trump Assassination Attempt

Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL), a former sniper, announced on Monday that he will be conducting a “parallel independent investigation” into the recent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. This decision comes in response to the establishment of Speaker Johnson’s Trump Assassination Attempt Task Force, which Mills and other critics have deemed inadequate.

Rep. Cory Mills expressed his disappointment with the composition and scope of the Trump Assassination Attempt Task Force announced by Speaker Johnson. The task force, which includes seven Republicans, notably lacks two former snipers, Eli Crane and Cory Mills himself.

Mills took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns: “It’s very unfortunate but not surprising for anyone familiar with how DC works. I’m not a politician, leadership, or a ‘yes man.’” He emphasized his dissatisfaction with the task force’s approach and outlined his plan for an independent investigation.

Mills has vowed to fund and lead an independent investigation into the assassination attempt. He stated, “I will personally fund whatever is required for additional staff to further investigation and expose the truth.” This parallel investigation will focus on gathering insights from subject matter experts (SMEs) and whistleblowers who have already come forward.

Concerns Over Task Force Composition

The Trump Assassination Attempt Task Force, comprised of Republicans such as Mike Kelly, Mark Green, and Clay Higgins, has faced criticism for its lack of involvement from individuals with direct experience in security and investigation. Mills and fellow Republican Eli Crane, both veterans with sniping experience, were notably excluded from the task force.

The assassination attempt on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, has been marred by several unanswered questions and inconsistencies. Critics, including Mills, argue that the official narrative does not add up:

  • Suspicious Timing and Actions: Thomas Crooks, the alleged assassin, reportedly flew a drone over the rally site two hours before Trump’s appearance, obtained a range finder through security, and managed to evade multiple law enforcement agencies.
  • Security Lapses: Crooks allegedly climbed onto a roof 450 feet away from Trump, evaded snipers, and took eight shots at the former president. He was also able to park a vehicle filled with explosives near the rally.
  • Unresolved Questions: Despite being flagged as suspicious by law enforcement, Trump was allowed to take the stage. The presence of Crooks and his actions raise questions about the effectiveness and responsiveness of the security measures in place.

Mills’ decision to spearhead an independent investigation reflects his belief that the official task force may not fully address the complexities of the case. He suspects that the Secret Service could have been complicit in the incident and is committed to uncovering the full truth, regardless of the limitations of the current task force.
