According to senior defense intelligence officials quoted in an American weekly magazine on Wednesday, CIA personnel have traveled to Ukraine on several covert missions to help Kiev with the use of new weapons and systems.
Some of those trips were not publicly disclosed. The report added that all missions were carried out concurrently to avoid direct conflict with Russian forces.
“The CIA has been operating inside Ukraine, under strict rules, and with a cap on how many personnel can be in the country at any one time,” one of the officials said.
He also noted that during these missions, CIA personnel was restricted from conducting clandestine activities or did it within “a very narrow scope.”
The report stated that it was unable to confirm the precise number
of CIA employees in Ukraine, but sources stated that it is typically less than 100.
According to the report, the CIA requested that specific locations in Ukraine where the agency is operating not be named. It was also mentioned that the agency bases its operations related to Ukraine in Poland. For instance, CIA Director William Burns made several trips there, and the nation is a communication hub for the agency’s agents, including those in Russia and Ukraine.
Russia has warned nations supplying Ukraine with weapons that it views those shipments as legitimate targets. Additionally, according to Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, NATO allies arming and training Ukrainians amounts to direct involvement in the conflict.
