More safeguards against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for Oklahomans and their tax dollars were put in place with the signing of Executive Order 2023-31 by Governor Kevin Stitt.
“In Oklahoma, we’re going to encourage equal opportunity, rather than promising equal outcomes,” said Governor Stitt. “Encouraging our workforce, economy, and education systems to flourish means shifting focus away from exclusivity and discrimination, and toward opportunity and merit. We’re taking politics out of education and focusing on preparing students for the workforce.”
In order to eliminate and fire non-critical personnel, the order mandates that state agencies and institutes for higher education review DEI positions, departments, activities, procedures, and programs. State funds, property, or resources may not be used by state agencies or higher education establishments for the following purposes:
Provide positions, departments, activities, procedures, or programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion insofar as they give preference to one person over another on the basis of their specific race, color, sex, ethnicity, or national origin;
require anyone to take part in, pay attention to, or receive any programming, education, training, activities, procedures, or programming that gives preference to any individual based on their specific race, color, sex, ethnicity, or country of origin;
require someone to swear, certify, or agree to any loyalty oath that favors or prefers a specific race, color, sex, ethnicity, or country of origin over another;
require someone to certify or declare agreement with, recognition of, or adherence to, any specific political, philosophical, religious, or other ideological viewpoint;
require someone applying for a job to provide a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement, or offer that applicant preferential consideration if they provide one;
require someone to reveal their pronouns.
